How wonderful Randy! Your writing has brought up some long ago memories. I backpacked through the Copper Canyon area and stayed in a little hotel in Batopilas around 1978. And bathed in that river, too. Jamie, our friend, was our tour guide as he had passed through this town several times in earlier years and knew several residents where he stayed. He spoke some of the language of the Tarahumara - Raramuri, and he spoke Quechua too. It was a fantastic experience. We didn't have motorcycles, but when we weren't hiking, there were times we hitch hiked and got rides on logging trucks and a ride in a caboose on the train. Met some wonderful people and had an adventure of a life time. I look forward to hearing more of your travels in Mexico.
It was one of my most favorite trips ever. Even though I was the only one who came down with a nasty stomach bug, I would do it all over again. When we drove back from Mexico to Austin, we found our pipes had frozen and house had caught on fire on the back wall and deck, so we had no electricity or water. I only wanted a hot bath and couldn't have one. I said "Take me to the hospital." I was so dehydrated, they gave me two IV bags of fluid and medicine for the bug which was shigella. I lost about 10 pounds that week. Ha! Yes, would do it all over again. Just talked w Jamie and he said he was up for another trip to Batopilas.

Joy, that's great that I was able to revive some old memories of Copper Canyon. Your story sounds so interesting. And you did it some 48 years ago.
